Special Issue of the Personal and Ubiquitous Computing Journal on Interactive Experiences for Television and Online Video.
Interactive experiences for online video and television is a research area of increased interest to an international community of academics and industrial practitioners. This area engages a wide range of disciplines, ranging from human-computer interaction, multimedia engineering and design to media studies, media psychology and sociology.
Novel interaction mechanisms, multi-screen solutions and insights on large-scale analysis of user feedback and viewers experiences are explored in this year’s conference program of the ACM International Conference on Interactive Experiences for Television and Online Video (ACM TVX). TVX2014 is being held in Newcastle upon Tyne from June 25th to 27th and stimulates discussions on relevant research about how to create, support, and evaluate interactive experiences.
This special issue will facilitate the further outreach of this cutting edge research and calls for innovative, thought provoking and original research articles, that address pressing questions around content production, system and infrastructure, devices and interaction techniques, experience design and evaluation, media studies, data science and recommendations, business models and marketing, as well as innovative concepts and media art. The whole process of creating interactive experiences for online video and television content needs attention in order to inform researchers and practitioners in this field.
This special issue aims to present a set of high quality, thought provoking, original research articles that address one or more of the following topics, but are not limited to:
- Content production: research on traditional and novel content production paradigms for the new media landscape. Including cross-platform services, interactive and transmedia storytelling, and personalization (user modeling and adaptive user interfaces)
- Systems & infrastructures: descriptions of the architecture, design, deployment, and evaluation of systems and infrastructures that support television and online video. Including delivery, transmission, and synchronization of media that leverages TV and online video experiences in a number of scenarios such as gaming, education, health care, etc.
- Devices & interaction techniques: descriptions of the design, architecture, usage and evaluation of devices and interaction techniques (e.g., gestures, multi-sensory interaction) that enable a connected ecosystem of devices, creating valuable new capabilities for television and online video.
- Experience design and evaluation: studies on how people interact with television and online video and how such systems should be designed to provide most engaging and novel user experiences. Including social and shared experiences in the interaction with television and online video.
- Media studies: studies that try to understand consumption practices and changing behavior, including research on ethical, regulatory, and policy issues. Including novel mechanisms for evaluating the impact of television and online video, and audience measurements.
- Data science and recommendations: descriptions of advanced computational systems based on content and/or user generated data to support collaborative filtering, interactive/synchronous environments, collective intelligence and crowd-sourcing, or location-based and context-aware applications and services.
- Business models & marketing: research and practice around novel business models and marketing strategies for the new media landscape of television and online video. Studies around novel ways of advertisement models and strategies.
- Innovative concepts and media art: research on innovative design strategies, new concepts, and prototype experiences for television and online video. Including case studies and media artworks and performances.
Articles must be based on original research, although extended versions of published conference papers may be acceptable if a substantial amount of new material is included. Electronic multimedia files (animations, movies, audio, etc.) and other supplementary files can be submitted and published along an article.
Submissions should be prepared based on the Springer journal template according to the Instructions for Authors on the journal homepage. Manuscripts must be anonymized and submitted as a PDF via easyChair.
